The Potential of New Media: Music and Ritual

With the advent of multimedia publishing, scholars are no longer limited to written or visual communication. Rather than write about, for example, ritualization in the animal world, translating sounds into text, we can integrate sounds into our presentations, interpretations, theories, criticisms, simply by embedding an audio file in a small video player, like this:

The recent advances in multimedia tools press us to think about how we may best utilize multiple media in doing scholarly work. New media also draws our attention to previously neglected dimensions of ritual, such as music. One could, for instance, use the songs below to instigate a debate on these kinds of questions: What is ritual music? Does the category make any sense? How does, or might, one study ritual music comparatively? How do variants affect the way ritualists experience a piece of music:
